Heat is the whole trick
Anyone can spray a bin with cold water. It loosens the debris and leaves the film — which is why the smell is back within the hour.
Why heat
Cold water relocates. Hot water removes.
What coats the inside of a neglected cart is not loose dirt. Fats, sugars and proteins from food waste bond to the plastic and dry into a film, and bacteria colonize it. That film is the smell.
Cold water at garden-hose pressure cannot break that bond. It pushes the top layer around and leaves the rest, which is why rinsing a bin works for about an hour.
Heat is what changes the outcome. At the temperature we run, the fats release, the bond fails, and high pressure carries the material off the wall instead of smearing it. The heat also does the sanitizing work that no amount of cold pressure will.
